Step 1: Count usable days, not calendar labels
Five days usually means four nights; seven days means six. Overnight travel outside Kerala is separate. A late arrival and early departure can leave less sightseeing time than the trip label suggests.
Write the overnight location beside each day before adding attractions. Two consecutive nights in one place leave one day without checking out. One-night stops mean packing and moving again the next day.

Check your Kerala night plan
A seven-day trip normally needs six nights in the route. Count each continuous hotel or boat stay once. A return to the same town later is another stay.
Worked example: Munnar 2 nights + Thekkady 1 + Alappuzha 1 + Kovalam 2 = 6 nights. Four stays mean three accommodation changes. This is an example to adapt, not a confirmed itinerary.
For 7 days and 6 nights, four stays mean 3 accommodation changes. That leaves 2 days between check-in and check-out at the same stay, before activity choices.

Kovalam is in the Thiruvananthapuram area, as described by Kerala Tourism. Using that departure area is a route option to compare, not a promise of a particular flight or transfer time.

Step 4: Decide pace and accommodation style
Choose your pace before choosing the hotel category. More hotel bases mean more check-outs. Longer stays protect time at your favourite places. A premium trip can use 3-star-plus hotels; the difference can be personal planning, the room choice and clear support.
Houseboat or backwater hotel?
Ask for a private or shared boat basis, room count, air-conditioning hours, cruise window and meals in writing. With a hotel or resort, ask whether any backwater cruise is separate. Step 5: Compare two Kerala quotes on the same basis
A cheaper headline can describe a different trip. Before comparing totals, put these details side by side:
- Nights: each overnight location and the total night count.
- Rooms: property, room category, occupancy and any extra bed.
- Vehicle: vehicle type, transfer points, sightseeing scope and luggage needs.
- Meals: which meals are included on which days.
- Backwaters: hotel, day cruise or overnight houseboat, with its exact service basis.
- Activities: named inclusions, entry tickets and anything paid separately.
- Charges: taxes, parking, driver allowances and any limits.
- Confirmation: availability, payment stages and the supplier terms that apply.
